Questions answered

Do Civilians have to escape to win the match?
Escaping is how you personally survive, but it is not the point of the round. Leaving early with residents still inside gives you a low score and lets Michael Myers keep hunting, so the strongest Civilians help others out first and save their own exit for last.
How many residents can follow one Civilian?
A single Civilian can lead a maximum of two followers at once. To move more residents you have to split them up, order the extras to hide, or send them to escape on their own with a command.
What item breaks a grab from Michael Myers?
A small blade such as a pocket knife lets you resist when Michael grabs you. Keep one equipped in a spare slot so the resist prompt is always available; the full capture-escape sequence is covered in the escape guide.

What does a Civilian actually have to do in Halloween: The Game?

A Civilian is not a survivor running solo for the fence. Your role is to protect Haddonfield’s residents: find them, persuade them to trust you, keep them alive, and walk them to an exit. The round is scored on how many people you get out, so a Civilian who loots fast, arms followers, and prioritises Special Targets will always out-score one who sprints for the nearest escape.

As the multiplayer overview explains, each match is an asymmetric 1v4: one player is Michael Myers and four players are Civilians. The twist that separates this from other 1v4 horror games is the crowd of NPC residents spread across the map. Your win condition is really their survival, and Michael’s points come from cutting that crowd down. Everything below is drawn from a full civilian match on the launch build (Venttex, “Quick Breakdown of Civilian Objectives”).

Escape routes themselves — the police wagon, storm cellar, perimeter gate and sedan — are documented step by step in the escape guide. This page covers the broader survival skills that decide whether you reach those exits with people still behind you.

Which Civilian should you pick, and what do attributes and traits change?

Every Civilian has four rated attributes — Capability, Athleticism, Personality and Resourcefulness — plus three passive Traits that shape how you play. A high-Personality character persuades residents faster and strengthens police dispatch calls, while a low-Capability character is fragile and needs followers to absorb damage instead of trading hits.

The tested character here is Alexis Purcell: Personality 10, Athleticism 8, Resourcefulness 5, Capability 2. That spread makes her a talker and a support, not a fighter — she survives by surrounding herself with protected residents rather than by taking on Michael.

TraitVerified effect (in-game text)When it matters
Popular“Your followers take 90% less damage, gain 50% less fear, and fight more aggressively to protect you.”You run low health and want a bodyguard squad that can shrug off hits.
Panic Contagion“Helping a Resident escape increases movement speed by 2%.”Long sprints between houses once you start clearing residents.
Smooth Talker“Perfect area of the dispatch call skill check is increased by 10%.”Spamming landline calls to fill the police-shield meter.

The full playable roster and each survivor’s strengths are profiled on the Heroes of Haddonfield page. Match your pick to your job: take a Personality build if you want to lead residents, or an Athleticism build if you would rather run items and scout ahead.

How do you find tools and weapons quickly?

Search everything. Drawers, fridges, counters, desks and tool chests are where the round is won, because most progress is gated behind a specific item. Work room-to-room, keep an eye on the objective tracker on the left of the HUD, and grab what a follower can carry so your squad stays armed.

Once you have tools, the fastest way to fill the police-shield meter is a landline. Dialling a working house phone runs a dispatch-call skill check; a clean call nudges the shield count up toward the three shields needed to summon the wagon.

How do you recruit and manage resident followers?

Persuading a resident is a timed skill check, not a free button. A moving marker asks you to stop it in the target window — nail it for a “Perfect Skill Check” bonus and the resident joins you; miss it and there is a short cooldown before you can talk to them again, and a stubborn resident may simply refuse.

The practical rules, all observed live:

  1. Two followers maximum. A third will not attach; you have to order someone to hide or escape to free a slot.
  2. Arm them immediately. Hand a follower a knife, cleaver or gun — an armed resident fights back and survives longer.
  3. Use the right command. The interaction wheel lets you Follow, Hide, or Escape. Send wounded or cornered residents to hide, and tell a ready one to escape on their own once an exit is open.
  4. Expect them to lock doors. Followers open and shut doors as they move, which can strand you behind a locked door mid-chase.

The NPC AI is genuinely useful: residents will call the police on their own and clear some objectives while you loot, so you can split duties instead of micromanaging every action.

How do you avoid Michael Myers and survive a grab?

You cannot kill Michael as a Civilian, so survival is about distance, numbers and a clean get-away. Move between cover, keep lit rooms and line-of-sight working for you, and never let yourself get boxed into a room with a single exit.

  • Travel in a group. With a trait like Popular, your followers tank hits and swarm him, so a lone Civilian is far more fragile than a pack of three.
  • Break the grab with a blade. If Michael closes in and grabs you, a pocket knife triggers the resist-capture counter and buys you seconds to run. The full grab-escape sequence is detailed in the escape guide.
  • Respect the dark. Michael’s mobility depends on shadow and broken line of sight; the Michael Myers profile covers how his tracking and Shape Jump work so you can deny them.

How do experience and scoring pace a Civilian run?

Civilians earn XP for the actions that matter, and the notifications make the priorities obvious: a “Perfect Skill Check!” pays a few hundred XP, while a “Commanded Resident” getting out can pay thousands. Stacking clean persuasions and successful escapes is what turns a survivable night into a high-scoring one.

  • Prioritise Special Targets. The match tracks named Special Targets (Marcus, Thomas and Rachel on the tested map). Getting them out is worth the most, because those same residents give Michael his biggest points if he kills them.
  • Deny, do not just survive. Every resident you walk out is a resident Michael cannot farm, so a “safe” run where nobody escapes still loses the value war.
  • Progress carries forward. Leveling characters and unlocking Perk Cards is a separate loop, covered in the progression and customization guide.
